Are you an informed vehicle owner that knows what car maintenance needs to be done when and why?  If so, you are a rare breed!  Many vehicle owners don’t understand why preventative vehicle maintenance is so important.  They think that as long as their car gets them from point A to point B, everything is fine.

Adhering to the preventative vehicle maintenance schedule makes sure your car keeps running properly!  Always refer to the owner's manual or your auto mechanic for the particular service and intervals required for your vehicle.

The following guidelines are the approximate intervals many car manufacturers suggest vehicle maintenance be performed.

Many new drivers often ask this question.  The standard answer used to be every three months or 3,000 miles.  This advice now feels as outdated as car cassette players and road atlases in your glove compartment.  There is a lot of controversy about the right interval for oil changes.  Many mechanics still recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles for most cars. However, with today’s modern engines, certain types of high-quality synthetic oils can go for many more miles, possibly as many as 10,000.

According to Ford Motor Company, drivers with typical driving habits with vehicles 2008 and newer should change the oil every 7,500 miles or six months, or whichever comes first. Drivers with vehicles 2007 and older should change the oil every 5,000 miles or six months, or whichever comes first.  Drivers with less typical driving habits (i.e.; frequent off-road driving or driving in dusty conditions, towing or carrying heavy loads, excessive idling or driving at low speeds for long distances) with vehicles 2008 and newer should change oil every 5,000 miles or six months, and every 3,000 miles or three months for cars 2007 and older.

Wondering how often do you need an oil change? Ask an oil change expert at Big Lake Automotive and also find out about their oil change coupons.

Has your vehicle seemed sluggish when trying to go up a hill or passing a slower vehicle? Has a dashboard light come on and you don’t know why? Because today’s modern vehicles are designed with computer processors, microchips, and sensors, it is wise to periodically schedule a car diagnostic service to scan for pending problems. Your vehicle’s computer will be linked to a specialized computer to scan the operating systems, producing a report of the “fault codes” that may be stored in the vehicle’s memory system.

Certified technicians have been trained to read these codes, indicating the type of problem, whether it’s a need for a simple car tune up, or a part which may need to be replaced. This diagnostic will save your mechanic a lot of time troubleshooting a problem, as well as save you money because you don't have to pay for repairs performed on a "trial-and-error" basis.

Wondering when should you get a tune up on your car? Schedule a car diagnostic service to determine if your vehicle is in need of a tune up.
