Taking the time to have your vehicle inspected and maintained is the best way to ensure that it will keep running as intended with all of its components working together. This inspection should include the exhaust system. Your exhaust system is most effective when it is neither seen nor heard. Unfortunately, that means that it is “out of sight; out of mind.” Don’t wait until you hear the rumbling sounds of trouble before scheduling a muffler repair

The signs of exhaust system problems can be detected by the average driver, as described below:

  1. Noisy Engine – One of the first signs of exhaust problems is an excessively noisy engine. For example, if you have a faulty exhaust manifold gasket, it will cause an exhaust leak that sounds like a hissing or tapping sound.
  2. Decreased Power and Acceleration – Exhaust system problems will affect the performance of your engine. You won’t be able to accelerate as well or as quickly, and you won’t have the expected power.
  3. Decreased Fuel Efficiency – If you have an exhaust system problem, your engine has to work harder, therefore using more fuel. The cost of muffler repair will save you money at the pump.
  4. Burning Smell – If your gasket fails and begins to leak onto engine parts, the heat from the exhaust gases could cause these parts to start to burn, releasing a burning smell or possibly even a little smoke from under the hood. Have your vehicle inspected immediately to avoid any risk of danger to yourself or your passengers.
  5. Dragging Muffler – If your muffler is hanging or dragging on the ground, you should have it fixed immediately as it can be a driving hazard for you and to the other drivers around you.
  6. Gas Smell – If you start to smell gas inside your car when driving, it is usually caused when one of the exhaust pipes or tubes develops a leak. The fumes from the fuel escape through any place they can, including the cabin of your car.

These are just a few signs of exhaust system problems. Contact our ASE Certified technicians at Big Lake Automotive today for more information about muffler repair and to schedule an appointment. Our auto shop proudly serves the residents of Big Lake, MN, and surrounding areas.

There are several tell-tale signs of exhaust system problems which will lead to a muffler repair. Have your muffler and exhaust system inspected by a professional auto repair technician on a regular basis.
