You want a safe and dependable vehicle but you may be wondering how many miles can you go before you need car service? To put it simply--follow the maintenance schedule recommended by the vehicle manufacturer as stated in your owner’s manual. Or, if you prefer, your car repair technician at your trusted auto shop can keep you on schedule with the right service at the right time. You can have confidence in your vehicle knowing that you are driving as safe as possible.

This being said, many of today’s newer vehicles are equipped with an in-vehicle service reminder system. This means that some of the mileage-based interval schedules of days gone by are now obsolete. This reminder system will send an alert to the corresponding symbol on the dash panel when it is time for certain services, such as oil changes, fluid level checks, component inspections and other maintenance services. Even though this reminder system is generally accurate, double-check with your car repair technician to confirm the right service intervals, especially if you don’t drive very many miles during a year’s time.

If you are still driving an older vehicle without this reminder system, you will still want to adhere to the mileage-based service intervals. Your owner’s manual may list two service schedules, “normal” or “severe” based on how you drive. Many people drive under “severe” conditions as defined below:

  • Short trips or sustained stop-and-go driving
  • Extremely climate changes--hot, cold, or dusty
  • Mountainous terrain
  • Carrying heavy loads or towing a trailer.

Don’t wait until you have a major car repair issue before looking for an auto shop. Try them out for small maintenance issues so you know their technician’s training and certification, insurance coverage, and the quality of the work done. If you plan ahead, you can prevent emergency car repair at inconvenient times in an unfamiliar auto shop.
