Many new drivers often ask this question.  The standard answer used to be every three months or 3,000 miles.  This advice now feels as outdated as car cassette players and road atlases in your glove compartment.  There is a lot of controversy about the right interval for oil changes.  Many mechanics still recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles for most cars. However, with today’s modern engines, certain types of high-quality synthetic oils can go for many more miles, possibly as many as 10,000.

According to Ford Motor Company, drivers with typical driving habits with vehicles 2008 and newer should change the oil every 7,500 miles or six months, or whichever comes first. Drivers with vehicles 2007 and older should change the oil every 5,000 miles or six months, or whichever comes first.  Drivers with less typical driving habits (i.e.; frequent off-road driving or driving in dusty conditions, towing or carrying heavy loads, excessive idling or driving at low speeds for long distances) with vehicles 2008 and newer should change oil every 5,000 miles or six months, and every 3,000 miles or three months for cars 2007 and older.

It is still wise to schedule oil changes on a regular basis even though you may be able to go more miles in between.  This will give your mechanic the opportunity to check out the condition of other fluids, hoses, and operating systems for potential problems.

To determine how often to change your car’s engine oil, check your owner’s manual or talk with your mechanic, although it appears there’s some discrepancy between what many mechanics recommend and the manufacturer.  Do your research before deciding on an oil-change interval for your vehicle, dependent upon the type of oil used, the age and make of your vehicle, and your driving habits.

Don’t forget to ask your auto shop about their oil change coupons.  They are happy to offer these coupons to make frequent oil changes more affordable for their customers.
