Purchasing new tires is a big decision financially. Not only do new tires give you a smoother, more comfortable ride, but they also increase the handling safety of your vehicle. But, you may be wondering just how often do you need to replace tires, and how do you know what kind to put on your vehicle. First, if you know where it is, read your owner’s manual. It will state specifically the size and tread that should be used on your vehicle. Also, the tire repair specialists at your auto shop will be glad to answer your questions and help you choose the right kind of tire for your vehicle.

So how often do you need to replace tires? Here are two ways to tell if you need to buy new tires:

  • Penny test. Insert a U.S. penny into a tire’s tread. If Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s time for new tires. Because tire tread wears unevenly, test several spots about 15 inches apart.
  • Wear Bars. Built-in “wear bars” on tires are good indicators of when tires should be replaced. It is time to replace the tire when the wear bar is flush with the outside of the tread.

When purchasing new tires, here a several tips to consider:

  • Correct wheel size. Make sure the tire fits the wheels of your vehicle. You will find this information in your owner’s manual and on the information placard.
  • Buy a matching set. When all four tires are new together, they provide equal service and a greater level of safety. Buying mismatched tires creates a safety hazard.
  • Check the spare. Make sure the spare tire is still in good shape and if it needs to be replaced, get the same kind of tire as the other four.
  • Correct alignment and balancing. When having new tires installed, they should be both aligned and balanced. Otherwise, they can wear out unevenly and result in hazardous driving.
  • Breaking in new tires. Treat your tires gently as you break them in. This will ensure they begin to wear properly and that your alignment and suspension are in good condition.
