There may be times when you are confused about the right oil change for your car whether you’ve been driving for many years or just a few months. With all the advancements in vehicles plus the new types of oil products, who do you ask to find out how often does your vehicle needs an oil change and what kind of oil should you use?

Your vehicle’s service manual is the first place to look for the manufacturer’s recommended oil change. Of course, your auto mechanic can also keep you informed as to the best kind of oil and the mileage interval for your vehicle.

There are five main issues to consider about oil changes:

  1. When to change the oil. Many newer vehicles have service reminders on the instrument panel that illuminates when it is time for an oil change. This sensor monitors the number of miles driven and how hard the car is being driven.
  2. Check the oil level. At least once a month (if not more often), check the oil level to make sure it is adequate to keep the engine cooled and lubricated. You may need to top off the oil in between changes. Have even a small leak repaired as soon as possible so that you aren’t losing oil in between oil changes.
  3. Check the color of the oil. The oil should be brown or amber in appearance. If there are metal particles floating around in the oil, it could be a sign of internal engine damage.
  4. Oil Change Interval. Some mechanics still adhere to the “every 3,000 miles or every three months” rule, depending on your driving style. However, advances in engines and oil have made that rule debatable. Many automakers now recommend oil changes about every 7,500 miles up to 10,000 miles or six to 12 months. Even if you don’t drive many miles in a year, schedule an oil change every six months just to keep the oil fresh and clean.
  5. Choosing the Right Oil. Newer vehicles may have the weight of the recommended oil printed on the cap where you add oil. If not, check your owner’s manual to know what’s recommended or required.
