Most drivers know that when brakes get worn out, they should be replaced.  But just how often should you get your brakes serviced?  The components of brakes can be serviced without needing to replace them, such as cleaning, lubricating, and resurfacing.  This will make sure your brakes remain in good condition and that they are functioning properly so that your vehicle remains safe to drive.

So when should brakes be serviced, you ask?  Simply put, when needed!  For example, when you start to hear unusual noises or feel vibrations you hadn’t felt, these are indications that some components of the brake system may be sticking, or there is a buildup of dust or dirt. Some car manufacturers will include brake service in the maintenance schedule, specifying that brakes need to be inspected in regular mileage or time intervals; typically every 5,000-7,000 miles or every 4-6 months, whichever comes first.

In most brake repair shops, it is a usual practice to inspect brakes whenever the wheels are removed, such as during a tire rotation.  This inspection should include measuring the thickness of the brake pad and inspecting brake discs, and making sure that the pads and caliper guide pins are moving freely, cleaning and lubricating as necessary to prevent sticking or seizing. The rotors might need cleaning any surface rust to prevent squeaking.

If the brake pads are worn close to the minimum limit or the rotors are in bad shape, it might be more cost-effective to replace them. Your mechanic can inform you about how many more miles your brakes will last, or if you should actually replace the parts now.
