It’s a scary thought, but there are many cars on the road that haven’t received the basic car maintenance care to keep them in good operating condition. As long as their car gets them from Point A to Point B without any noticeable problems, the last thing on the mind of some drivers is seemingly unnecessary vehicle maintenance. But, little do they know that damage could be taking place in the motor, transmission, or other systems without affecting how their vehicle drives—that is until it stops running altogether!

After the harsh winter temperatures, ask your mechanic to compile a list of the required vehicle maintenance items to see you through spring and into summer. This not only will keep you safer on the road, but also protect the warranty (if any) on your vehicle as well as boosting its resale value.

So what are the basic car maintenance items listed in your service manual? Depending on the make and model of your vehicle (with a few variations), here are some of the basic vehicle maintenance items that drivers should be aware of:

  • Oil Changes—follow the appropriate interval for your car and remember to replace the filter.
  • Tire service—rotating tires, balancing, air pressure check, and wheel alignment adjusted.
  • Car battery—check the charge, clean the terminals and make sure the alternator is recharging the battery.
  • Tune up—an inspection (and adjustments or replacement) of the fluids, filters, belts, hoses, spark plugs, and emissions.
  • Windshield wipers—replace about every six months to a year, depending on whether you live in a rainy or dry climate.
  • Lights—clean the lenses and replace burned-out or broken bulbs.
  • Belts—the timing belt and serpentine belt should be replaced at the recommended mileage interval (typically anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000 miles).
  • A/C-heater—have it serviced at least once a year by a certified A/C technician.
  • Other operating systems—the transmission, radiator, brakes, steering, and exhaust systems should be inspected at least once a year.

An especially important benefit of regular car maintenance is that your mechanic can advise you of any work that should be done, either right away or what could wait until later. This will give you confidence that your vehicle will remain a safe and reliable source of transportation for many more miles.
