First of all, you may be wondering just what is a starter? Simply stated, it is a small motor, powered by the battery that starts your engine. The starter relay sits between the battery and the starter motor, transmitting power. If the starter doesn’t work, you won’t be going anywhere in your car!

So what are the symptoms of a bad starter?

  1. Clicking sound. You may hear a clicking noise when you turn the key or push the start button. However, there could be no sound at all when the starter dies.
  2. Lights only. When trying to start the engine and only the dashboard lights come on, the starter is probably the culprit.
  3. The engine doesn’t crank. If your engine won’t start, even after a jumpstart, it’s time to call roadside assistance for a tow.
  4. Smoke coming from your car. The starter is subject to blown fuses and short circuits. It can also overheat if you’ve tried several times to start your car, resulting in a burnt smell and possibly smoke.
  5. Oil on the starter. If there is oil on the starter, it means you have an oil leak.

Don’t wait to get stranded somewhere before having your starting system checked out—even if your problems are off and on. Of course, be sure to rule out a bad alternator and weak car battery before replacing the starter.
