Are you an informed vehicle owner that knows what car maintenance needs to be done when and why?  If so, you are a rare breed!  Many vehicle owners don’t understand why preventative vehicle maintenance is so important.  They think that as long as their car gets them from point A to point B, everything is fine.

Adhering to the preventative vehicle maintenance schedule makes sure your car keeps running properly!  Always refer to the owner's manual or your auto mechanic for the particular service and intervals required for your vehicle.

The following guidelines are the approximate intervals many car manufacturers suggest vehicle maintenance be performed.

  • Every 3,000 to 7,000 Miles.  The oil and oil filter should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommended auto maintenance schedule.  The majority of mechanics still suggest that the oil and oil filter be replaced between 3,000 and 7,000 miles. Have the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and wipers, tires and all exterior lights checked at each oil change.
  • Every 15,000 to 30,000 Miles.  Replace the air filter every 15,000 miles. Every 20,000 miles inspect the battery and coolant. Most 25,000-mile maintenance service requires replacing the fuel filter. Every 30,000 miles, replace the air filter and power steering fluid. Have the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and all suspension components inspected?
  • Every 35,000 to 50,000 Miles.  Inspect and replace the battery if it is not holding a charge or if it three to four years old. Every 40,000 miles replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires, and inspect the ignition system and suspension.
  • Every 60,000 Miles.  Replace brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belt. Inspect the HVAC, suspension components and tires.  A thorough inspection of all engine, transmission, cooling, brakes and suspension components should also be performed regularly.

Tip to Remember:  Keep a vehicle maintenance log.  Maintaining the maintenance schedule can optimize the resale value of your car, help prevent expensive repairs, avert possible roadside breakdowns, and increase the driving safety of your vehicle.  Extending the time between service intervals doesn’t really save you money because you may be spending more on costly car repair.
