When a battery fails, it’s usually not at a convenient time or place, possibly leaving you stranded until help arrives. If this seems to be happening to you more frequently, you may be wondering just what causes a car battery to die quickly. It could be time for a car battery replacement?

Checking the battery should be on your maintenance checklist, just like changing the oil or rotating your tires. Of course, the culprit may not be a bad battery, but a failing alternator or a starter going out.

If you are experiencing starting problems, here are a few things to check out:

  1. The headlights or dome lights were left on overnight, draining the battery of its charge.
  2. Battery terminals and cables may be loose, broken, corroded, or calcified,
  3. Extremely hot or cold temperatures will accelerate the problem if your battery is already starting to die.
  4. The fluid level in the terminals may be too low and need to be topped off.
  5. An electrical current, such as the memory function in your car radio, is drawing power from the battery even when the car is turned off. If your battery is already weak, it can finish it off.
  6. The charging system, which includes the starter and alternator, maybe going bad. Be sure to have these components checked out so you don’t end up paying for a battery you don’t really need.
