When you take your vehicle to your auto shop for a tune-up, you are essentially asking for an inspection of your engine, an analysis of the vehicle’s performance, and adjustments made as needed. What may be required during a car tune up will vary from vehicle to vehicle, based on age, mileage and unique manufacturer recommendations for that vehicle.

The tune up checklist includes both preventative and restorative engine assessment.

Take a look at the basic tune up checklist below:

  1. Check the spark plugs. Spark plugs should have light tan or gray insulator firing noses. Any other color could be the sign of an engine problem. What color is the spark and is it properly igniting the fuel? Make the spark plug wires are not hard or cracked.
  2. Check the fuel filter to make sure it isn’t clogged or dirty.
  3. Check the fuel pump for proper function.
  4. Inspect the fuel injectors to make sure dirt or other deposits are not restricting the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the engine, affecting how the spark plugs fire.
  5. Adjust the timing and idle.
  6. Check the PCV valve to make sure it isn’t clogged or leaking.
  7. Inspect the vehicle’s points and condenser.

A car diagnostic test can reveal a number of problems associated with your vehicle's engine and transmission, oil and gas tanks, exhaust system, or other systems. Today's vehicles are designed with computer processors, microchips, and sensors that can be linked to a computer which scans the operating systems to pinpoint exactly where a problem may exist. Your auto repair technician has been trained to read the codes indicating a problem or what might need to be replaced during a car tune up. This saves your mechanic a lot of time troubleshooting a problem and saves you money because you don't have to pay for repairs performed on a "trial-and-error" basis.
