You may be wondering if today’s vehicles really need a tune up. How often should you get a tune up and what happens if you don’t get a tune up? These are good questions to ask your auto repair mechanic.

First of all, what happens if you don’t get a tune up? If your car isn’t performing like you think it should, schedule a car diagnostic service. Here are a few issues that you will start to notice:

  • Check engine light comes on.
  • Engine stalls when you try to accelerate.
  • Decreased fuel economy.
  • Brake problems.
  • Shifting problems.
  • Excessive vibration or shaking in the steering wheel or seat.

What exactly is a tune up, you ask? There’s really not much that can be adjusted on many of today’s vehicles. Ignition timing, idle speed and fuel mixture are controlled by the engine computer. The term tune-up for today’s vehicles basically means a car diagnostic service for an engine performance analysis to pinpoint any potential problems, and then take care of any needed preventive maintenance.

However, if you’re experiencing some kind of driveability problem, such as hard starting, lower fuel economy, stalling, knocking sounds, or lost power, you will want to schedule a car diagnostic service. You may just need a new set of spark plugs!

Here are the typical services that may be classified as a tune up:

  • Replace air filter. This should be done about once a year so that the engine is getting the air it needs to run properly.
  • Visual inspection and replacement. An inspection of the engine’s fuel-system components to make sure that the fuel filter and fuel injector are clean and that the fuel pump is working properly. Also, an inspection of the spark plugs, the engine’s PCV value, ignition timing, air filters, oxygen sensor, distributor cap, and oil and coolant levels should be done and replacements made as needed.
  • Inspection of operating systems.Check all the operating systems, such as the brakes, suspension, air conditioning, and oil and fluid levels.

Wondering what happens if you don’t get a tune up? Contact our ASE Certified technicians at Big Lake Automotive today for more information and to schedule an appointment for a car diagnostic test. Our auto shop proudly serves the residents of Big Lake, MN and surrounding areas.
