Many drivers don’t really think about their car battery until they try to start their car and nothing works! What the problem, you wonder? Is it a dead battery, a failing alternator, or a bad car starter? If you can jump-start your car and get to an auto shop, your mechanic can pinpoint the problem for you. Otherwise, you may need to call for a tow. Your battery may simply need to have the terminals cleaned. Or it could actually be time for a car battery replacement.

There are some warning signs of a battery going bad that you should know to watch out for. For example:

  1. Slow engine crank. The car refuses to start.
  2. Rapid clicking sound when turning the key. The battery doesn’t have enough power to crank the engine.
  3. Headlights dim. They aren’t getting enough power.
  4. Electrical problems. The electronic accessories, such as the power seats, power windows, radio, dim dashboard lights, windshield wipers, etc., aren’t getting enough power from the battery to function properly.
  5. Dashboard warning light in the shape of a battery. This light indicates an issue with the electrical system, such as a bad battery or a failing alternator.
  6. Battery case becomes swollen. This can be caused by constant exposure to extreme temperatures (especially repeated freezing and thawing).
  7. Battery is getting close to the four-year mark. Because a battery usually only lasts around four to five years, have it tested frequently when it gets close to that time.
  8. Loose battery terminals. The battery will keep losing its charge until the terminals are tightened.

Tip to Remember: If your battery has died but your mechanic says it is still in good condition and there are none of the problems above, it is possible that light or accessory was left on without the car running. It may only need a simple recharge.
